This is not a post about Bill Ayres, although, as an aside, I'd like to note something. Ayres plotted awful things back in the day. But when you gather the "celebrities" from this campaign (Jeremiah Wright, William Ayres, Levi Johnson, Joe the Plumber, etc.), you notice pretty quickly that Bill Ayres is the one guy who seems to have behaved well. No interviews. No speeches. Keeps his head down. Does his job. Lives his life. Gives every indication that he does not need his 15 minutes. Which is nice.
Nope, the real subject of this post is Governor Charlie Crist of Florida. He's a Republican, although you'd hardly know it of late. As the link shows, Steve Benen has noticed the same pattern I have: Charlie Crist, formerly McCain's best friend and arguably the guy who won McCain the Republican nomination by helping him to win the Florida primary, has been noticeably AWOL. Crist has gone to Disney World rather than campaigning with McCain, denied that Obama is a socialist, denied that there's any voter fraud, refused to appear in any McCain commercials--in short, he really, truly wants nothing to do with the McCain campaign. Could be personal; McCain picked Sarah Palin rather than him and, frankly, that should anger every American. Most all of us are more qualified than she is. But professional politicians, and Crist is one, usually let that sort of thing slide, especially if they fear consequences in the future.
Charlie Crist is Governor of Florida. And he clearly doesn't fear John McCain in the least. Which tells you which way the Florida wind is blowin...
