From what I remember, the rumor was that Pujols got lowballed by St Louis. They only offered 8 years at a lower AAV than the Angels, and they didn't offer him a personal services contract after he retired.

Besides, St. Louis fans got financial flexibility by letting Pujols walk. They were free to build a team instead of their lineup being Pujols and the Seven Dwarves.
