I see no better justification for writing an academic piece about a speech that one just simply likes. There's always "news" in discussing how a speech hits the right "note," in the right moment, at the right time. The "news" is that it's HISTORY, and it's NOW. The "news" is that one can learn about governing and statecraft in our moment. The "news" is that we need to see exemplars of excellence. The "news" is that students of speechcraft need to know what is excellent and what sucks. I worry the warrant here is that you'll not write/publish about this speech because that it's not canonical, or transcendent, or what have you. If it moved you, it'll move us. There are reasons to write about +affect+ and speech-making! And they are good reasons!

We have a tendency, in our field, to not write about something if it's not a theory-changer. I think, though, that essays about good speeches are helpful and interesting and something we should welcome.

Sorry to be so preachy. I'd welcome a Murphy essay about this speech, just focused on its craft. Well crafted speeches are important to our lives. Having just endured a number of funerals, I've never been more committed to this belief. What a president says matters. Big time. Even if it's just for two minutes.

I'd love to embrace this perspective, Josh, and often I do. But one of the interesting things about writing a blog is this: at times, the entry says about all I have to say about a speech. I like this speech and there are the reasons why. Maybe it'll play a role in a larger project on Obama someday, with other speeches. But I dunno--this seems to express what i feel. Do you run into this? A blog entry sort of says what you have to say and that's it, even when you have a nice feel for something?

On the other hand, some speeches, after an entry, stick with me. I keep turning over his Nobel Prize speech. I'll probably talk about that at NCA, at least.
